The Lobster (2015)

The Lobster (2015)

"A wickedly funny protest against societal preference for nuclear coupledom that escalates, by its own sly logic, into a love story of profound tenderness and originality." — Variety

In an unspecified near future, the laws of the city require single people to visit ‘The Hotel’ where they are obliged to find a life partner in 45 days or be turned into animals and banished into the forest. We follow David (played by a delightfully deadpan Colin Farrell) as he enters the hotel, but after several romantic misadventures flees, joining an underground group of dissenters who question the path that is chosen for them.

For his English language debut, Lanthimos has created a sly and original sci-fi, romantic comedy that looks like the real world, but like many of his earlier films, follows its own internal laws and logic. Populated by a stellar cast including Rachel Weiz, Olivia Colman, Lea Seydoux and John C. Reilly, The Lobster is a demented rebuttal to the obsession for pairing off and finding ‘the one’.

Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival 2015
