Contempt (1963)

Contempt (1963)

Australian Premiere - 4K Restoration

“Few films have achieved such elegance.” — Total Film

A landmark in world cinema, and set around the extraordinary Villa Malaparte on Capri; Contempt tells the doomed romance between Paul and his wife, Camille. Paul is enlisted the task of re-writing a film script. Whilst he becomes engrossed in writing, he appears oblivious to the film producer’s interest in his irresistibly beautiful wife, Camille. In turn, we witness the tragic unfolding of Paul and Camille’s marriage.

Recently restored in 4K as part of Cannes Classic Selection for its 60th Anniversary, Contempt features highly-acclaimed style icon Brigitte Bardot as Camille and legendary French actor Michel Piccoli as Paul. Jean Luc Godard’s New Wave masterpiece has never looked better.

The film's unforgettable score by multi-award-winning composer, Georges Delerue, can also be heard in the film And the Party Goes On, which is screening at Europa! Europa.

Co-presented by Melbourne Cinemathéque.
